Environmental Outreach and Education Programs
Compton Creek Watershed Pollution Prevention Partnership Program
California Greenworks instituted a first-of-its-kind watershed pollution prevention partnership. The two-year project sponsored by the Regional Water Quality Control Board is geared to raise community awareness of watershed pollution prevention. Polluted water and trash flowing into storm drains is the greatest danger to the wellbeing of birds and animals that live in the coastal wetlands drained by the Compton Creek Watershed. The partnership provides a low impact solution by installing storm drain catch basins and screens preventing trash from entering the waterways.

Environmental Art Contest
Our organization developed a poster contest for Earth Day design to engage elementary grade students on the importance of protecting the environment through Art. The success of this project has sparked interest among elementary school teachers utilizing art as a tool to inspire students in the field of earth science.

The poster art contest was designed to provide visual illustration of youth interpretation on how we should protect our planet, conserve energy & water, recycling and reduce global warming. Winners are selected from these topic areas and will be announced during our earth day event each April.(Click Here for Application)

Martin Luther King Boulevard Main Streets Project in California communities
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered across South Los Angeles communities with a street named in his honor. Designated as Martin Luther King Boulevard (MLK), the thoroughfare spans across the heart of the African American Community. Unfortunately, once a point of community pride, the years have taken their toll. MLKs have been forgotten and many have been pushed aside as nothing more than a street with abandoned housing and unsuitable business activities.

Revitalizing MLKs lives at the core at California Greenworks. Our goal is to positively impact communities that are within a specific reach of an MLK Blvd. street, or avenue. Bringing the pride back into the neighborhoods along an MLK Blvd. will come from grass roots initiatives. The initiatives include: "Green Job" creation, entrepreneurial development with sustainable green careers and, beautification projects along Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. By positively impacting the community, an MLK Blvd. will once again become the vibrant economic freedom cornerstone that Dr. King, Jr. had envisioned for his people.

Stocker Trail Ingold Park Connection Project
The Stocker Trail Project gives a wonderful chance to reconnect with nature for the people living in the Baldwin Hills, Windsor Hills, and Ladera Heights. The nearly mile-long trail follows along a natural setting where many species of plants and animals some native only to Southern California call home. Walking the trail provides an imaginary peek into the past reminiscent of a time when Southern California was a vast and empty land. History in the Baldwin Hills dates back to at least 500 A.D. when Native Americans first inhabited the coastal region. The Baldwin Hills, with its abundance of plants and animals, became the Native American's breadbasket. During the 1800s, Spanish settlers established large ranches over much of what is today the Los Angeles Basin. Creating this connection from the Stocker trail to Ingold Park above will allow residences from the surrounding Baldwin Hills communities to share in the wondrous experience of historical value and nature within our urban setting. This project is a collaboration with the Baldwin Hills Conservancy.

Annual Earth Day Festival Program
California Greenworks directs its efforts to the communities in South Los Angeles—the neighborhoods having the most need. Our projects revolve around education because we believe bettering people goes further than a quick fix. In concert with Earth Day, California Greenworks produces the annual South LA Earth Day Festival also known as the South LA Earth Fest. Since 2006, Earth Fest has focused on environmental education and personal health awareness. The event takes place during the 3rd week in April each year. www.southlaearthfest.org
